Worthwhile; generally good common sense but, with so many forces trying to eradicate that, a refresher is always good.

The book, unfortunately, promotes the widely believed myth that 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Untrue.

The statistic came out of a feminist group a few years ago. They divided the total number of marriages in a year by the total number of divorces: 50%.

However, the divorces were cumulative. So the marriages (for that single year) were divided by divorces due to marriages FOR ALL PREVIOUS YEARS.

So everyone married in say 1994 was compared to all the divorced marriages from say 1940 to 1994. Good example of how to lie with statistics.

When you compare apples and apples (say the total number married in 1960 compared to how many of the SAME PEOPLE were divorced by 1994, you get something like 6%)

But some like the inflated false number better. They want to redefine what is normal (divorce can’t be abnormal if more than half do it!) thus make it the easy path to take.

Everyone repeats the 50% number, it’s false, and a shame this book fell for it too.

As someone who’s read a ton of these books (IKDG, I Gave Dating a Chance, Boy Meets Girl, Lady in Waiting, etc etc etc!), this is a book that has a great purpose, but is on the borderline. The problem with the Ten Commandments of Dating is that it’s easy (and tempting) for people to fall into thinking that these are a sure-fire way to be okay. They’re not. Only relying fully on God can get you anywhere. But the fact is that these ARE important considerations, and when these rules are kept with the right frame of mind/heart/spirit, you’re much better off.

Finally, someone has written a book that is not based on some mystical notion that you will one day know who you are supposed to spend time with and marry. In Ben Young’s “Ten Commandments of Dating” he and Dr. Sam Adams look at 10 Commandments of Dating. Some of which are unabashedly politically incorrect. They take an informative and practical look at dating and why many marriages fail. They cover all the bases, from what you should focus on when not dating anyone(get a life and better yourself!) to how to “engage your brain” and not be swept away by emotional or romantic feelings of the relationship. Young and Adams have given us perhaps one of the most applicable books about dating to ever come along. If their advice is taking you can expect healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

Reading this book is a pleasure, as well as a learning experience. I have ordered several copies to send to my daughter at college, and she tells me they are in great demand.
