I cannot believe I purchased this book. This didn’t help me at all in my constant pursuit of “getting some action.” The sentence structure was off and I couldn’t find any good parts. Josh Harris doesn’t know the first thing about women.

I appreciate the idea of old-fashioned courtship, but as other reviewers have stated, not much depth is revealed in the anecdotes of couples getting to know each other in this book. It seems like Josh and his friends are a bunch of middle school age guys choosing women on the basis of their looks—there is little detail on how the friendships develop to a deeper level based on genuine experience of character.

The focus of the book is on chastity prior to marriage. Despite Joshua’s assurances that love overcomes inexperience, anyone old enough to remember the realities of the 1950’s will recall that many marriages of that era suffered unsatisfactory sex lives owing to lack of experience in the partners: it was not uncommon for women to be nonorgasmic if they married as virgins. Fortunately for Joshua, his wife is widely experienced. He might be telling a different story if she wasn’t.

I think Harris loses most of his credibility in his brand of Christianity. He comes across as smug and self-righteous to me. Harris tells us that marrying a non-Christian is “non-negotiable.” How intolerant can you get? And how do you corral that personal point-of-view to keep you from regarding other mixed-religious couples and their offspring nonjudgmentally? It rings of prejudice to me–all the seeds of hatred sown in fundamentalism against “others.” Yuck! The truth is, there are plenty of mixed-religious unions in America that are successful.

It wasn’t that long ago that Joshua would be widely viewed as unsuitable for Shannon due to his mixed-race ancestry. He really needs to open his mind to “mixed unions” between good-hearted individuals. His narrow-mindedness is self-serving and wrong.

I guess if you think your way is the only way and the right way, all those other people out there will just have to burn in hell. This isn’t my idea of Christ’s compassion toward others.

Josh referenced God’s amazing kindness on page 109. Maybe this young man needs to spend some time in Africa (or the U.S!)serving starving people before he publishes another pollyanna tome. This one is better entitled, “Recognized Author Scores Beautiful Blonde At the Altar.” Maybe we can re-live the 60’s when Josh and Shannon’s daughter brings an Islamic man home for dinner who she has kissed and they are forced to deal with their narrow-minded “Christian” brand of love and acceptance: “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” Good film.

Unfortunately this is yet another classic case of validating an impeccibly narrow view of scripture through loose and popular one-liners; I am staggered by the lack of integrity, but even more so by the continued obsession with the Church of matters of petty morality, at the expense of true Gospel issues. Boy meets Girl indeed – Joshua Harris is clearly a boy in this one; I do not recommend that you attempt to chart any of his growth into genuine masculinity through this or any of his other work. Try ‘Money, Sex and Power’ by Richard Foster.
